Soft Enamel Pins — Custom Design with Recessed Color Wells

Soft enamel pins have raised metal lines and recessed color wells you can feel with your fingertip. Otsu generates production-ready files (dieline, CMYK, PDF/X-1a) tuned for the soft enamel finish in 30 seconds.

What makes soft enamel pins different

Soft enamel is the older of the two enamel pin finishes. The metal mold is etched, the recesses filled with colored enamel, then baked at lower temperature. The enamel sits below the metal lines instead of being polished flush, giving every soft enamel pin a tactile, dimensional feel.

Recessed color wells

Color sits below raised metal lines. Run your fingertip across a soft enamel pin and you feel ridges and valleys.

Wider palette tolerance

Soft enamel handles slightly more colors per design without the matching headaches of hard enamel.

Sharper fine detail

Tighter linework reads cleanly because the recessed wells protect ink from spreading.

Lower cost per unit

Lower kiln temperature plus less polishing labor means soft enamel pins are typically the cheaper finish.

Tactile, vintage feel

Many collectors specifically prefer the dimensional surface texture of soft enamel pins for fan art and indie merch.

When to choose soft enamel pins

Fan art and OC pins

The textured finish suits illustrative artwork, watercolor-feel palettes, and OC merch.

Kawaii and pastel designs

Pastel palettes and kawaii mascots feel right at home in soft enamel.

Budget-conscious runs

Soft enamel pins keep per-unit cost down for indie creators and Kickstarter early-bird tiers.

Illustrative line work

Strong outlines and detailed lineart show off best with the raised-line, recessed-color geometry.

High-volume merch drops

Wider color tolerance and lower cost make soft enamel pins the default for big merch drops.

Soft enamel pin FAQ

How are soft enamel pins different from hard enamel?

Soft enamel pins keep the enamel recessed below the metal lines (you can feel the ridges); hard enamel pins are polished flush smooth. Soft enamel is cheaper, more textured, and easier to add fine detail to. Hard enamel feels more premium and survives daily abuse better.

Are soft enamel pins durable?

Yes, but slightly less than hard enamel. The exposed enamel surface can scratch over years of heavy use. For most fan art, OC, and merch use cases this is not a problem.

What is the minimum order for custom soft enamel pins?

Most manufacturers set MOQ around 50 to 100 units for soft enamel pins. With Otsu you can also order single pieces with no minimum — see our no-minimum lapel pin page.

How many colors fit on a soft enamel pin?

Soft enamel pins commonly handle 6 to 8 colors comfortably. Adding more is possible but increases cost and the chance of color matching deviation. Otsu auto-flattens your palette to a soft-enamel-friendly count.

Can soft enamel pins have glitter or glow-in-the-dark?

Yes. Soft enamel takes glitter ink and glow-in-the-dark phosphor especially well because the recessed surface holds the additive. See the hard-vs-soft enamel page for finish add-on options.
